PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- The 200-unit Ponte Vedra Inn & Club, which is spread out over several buildings, will mark its 75th anniversary in 2003.

In anticipation of the event, phase one of a three-phase renovation was launched in 1998.

It focused on the complete restoration of the Ocean Golf Course, expansion of the Golf Club and the addition of a 30,000 square-foot administration building.

Between now and December 2002, the property will add another 46 guest units as well as enlarge its gym and spa, according to Andy Radovic, director of marketing.

This will bring the total inventory to 246 units, all commissionable, he said.

Phase two began in August 2000, when the original 75-unit main inn, built in 1937, was demolished.

A rendering of the four-story building that will contain the lobby of the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club. On its site, a four-story structure is being built. It will have 21 guest rooms, including a two-level penthouse suite and a two-story lobby with a coffered ceiling, a chandelier and European-style registration desks.

Until late September, when the new building opens, guests are checking in at a temporary administration facility, he said.

In addition, there will be 5,000 square feet of upscale and specialty shopping space in the new building.

Its second and third floors will house the guest rooms, all reflecting the feel of the 1930s and 1940s.

Queen Anne furniture in light pine, for example, was selected for the rooms to complement the rustic, heart-of-pine flooring.

The third and fourth floors are the locale for the 1,200-square-foot, two-level penthouse suite, which will have a baby grand piano.

Phase two also includes construction of a two-story, 2,900-square-foot oceanfront fitness center called Surf Club's Gym. The projected opening is October.

Phase three of the renovation calls for a 25-room addition to the Island House, which will consist of a series of guest cottages.

All of these units will overlook the lagoon and the Island Golf Course's ninth hole.

Also, the 10,000-square-foot spa will be doubled in size. The opening is set for fall 2002.

Separately, the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club offers a one-night Escape; two-night-and-longer Golf, Golf Widow's, Family, Tennis and Sports packages as well as three-night Spa & Fitness and Labor Day Holiday plans.

Rack rates through Aug. 31 are from $225 per night.

A $10 (single occupancy) and $12 (double) daily surcharge is added to room rates to cover gratuities for maids, bell service and the doorman.

The property, founded in 1928, is situated on 300 oceanfront acres.

It offers a total of 36 holes of golf, tennis and 30,000 square feet of meetings space.
