Posada de las Flores adds an upscale option for Loreto

LORETO, Mexico -- A new hotel has "blossomed" in the historic port city of Loreto, the oldest town in Baja California Sur.

The 15-room Posada de las Flores (Flower Inn) is Loreto's first luxury hotel, offering visitors to this popular sport-fishing and diving destination a step up from the town's comparatively basic accommodations.

The hotel is located in the heart of Loreto's main square, which was recently restored and closed to vehicular traffic to make strolling easier.

It sits two blocks from the beach near the mission of Nuestra Senora de Loreto, which was founded in 1697.

The Posada was built and decorated to resemble an 18th century Mexican hacienda with sun-dappled courtyards, spouting fountains, iron balconies and Mexican crafts and antiques.

Guests can choose between standard rooms and junior suites, each with a 27-inch television with a VCR, a telephone, a safe deposit box and a hair dryer.

The more deluxe suites add a minibar, a CD player, a bathrobe and a fruit basket that is replenished daily.

Guests can swim in the rooftop glass-bottom pool that can be seen from the lobby three floors below. The rooftop garden surrounding the pool offers a quiet place to relax and take in the views of the Sea of Cortes and the Coronados Islands.

There are two restaurants: the Mexican Roof Garden, where guests can dine indoors or al fresco, and Vecchia Roma, an Italian restaurant that is popular with locals.

Before or after a meal, guests can visit the hotel's cozy bar which serves 300 brands of tequila and cognac and offers 60 brands of cigars.

For active guests, the Posada offers free shuttle service to a nearby 18-hole golf course. Guests also can arrange deep-sea fishing trips; whale-watching excursions; diving and snorkeling trips, and tennis at the nearby John McEnroe Tennis Center.

For guests who want to explore the surrounding area by car, the hotel has its own fleet of Volkswagen Beetle convertibles exclusively for guests' use.

Rates range from $140 per person, single or double, for a standard room to $230 for a junior suite. Breakfast is included.

A six-night Blue Cortez package includes three nights at the inn in Loreto and three nights at a sister property in Punta Chivato, plus transfers, three dinners, daily breakfast, excursions, and taxes and tips.

It costs $480 per person, double, and is available July 1 to Dec. 20.
