Power Restored in Auckland

LOS ANGELES -- Power was being restored in Auckland, New Zealand, following the massive failure in late February of electricity cables in the central business district, according to the New Zealand Tourism Board.

Power blackouts had affected a 1.8 mile radius of the city.

The tourism board said all major hotels had been operating on generators, and the airport, hospitals and transportation services were unaffected. "The situation is continually improving, with automated teller machines and traffic lights now working," said a spokesman.

Agents can contact the board here for more information at (800) 388-5494.
