Puerto Vallarta assessing hurricane damage

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico -- As many as five resorts and approximately 1,600 rooms remain closed in Puerto Vallarta after sustaining water damage in the wake of Hurricane Kenna, which roared ashore near Puerto Vallarta Oct 25.

Carlos de Leon, director of the Puerto Vallarta Convention and Visitors Bureau, identified the hotels as the Sun Resort, Las Palmas, Continental Plaza, Pescador Hotel and Rosita Hotel.

Dennis Whitelaw, president of the Puerto Vallarta Hotel Association, said officials still were assessing the damage to the tourism infrastructure, but he expected the affected properties would be completely operational within one to eight weeks.

"The good news is that only about 5% of our businesses, including restaurants and shops, were affected," said Whitelaw.

Meanwhile, no cruise ships were diverted or canceled their Puerto Vallarta calls.
