Puerto Vallarta resort adds convention center to tap group market

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico -- A $1.1 million convention center is scheduled to open Aug. 14 at La Jolla de Mismaloya resort here.

The free-standing, 7,000-square-foot center will be the largest of its kind in Puerto Vallarta's southern hotel zone and the second-largest in Puerto Vallarta.

The center will be able to accommodate up to 600 people. The hotel's public areas, including terraces around three pools and beside the beach, can accommodate up to 1,000.

The new $1.1 million convention center is next door to La Jolla de Mismaloya. The center will have the latest in audiovisual equipment as well as trunk lines to broadcast meetings and conventions to other cities and countries.

It also will feature a stage, a dance floor and a service kitchen.

Santiago Gutierrez, general manager, said the new center will make La Jolla de Mismaloya competitive with Puerto Vallarta's Westin, Marriott and Camino Real resorts.

"There's already a substantial group business in Puerto Vallarta, with most of the international business going to the Marriott and Westin, and the national business going to the Camino Real," said Gutierrez. "With the new center, we think we can get a piece of both markets."

Gutierrez said he expects that up to 95% of the center's business will come from the U.S., with about half of that coming from California.

He said La Jolla's all-suite makeup -- there are 303 suites (many with kitchenettes), 16 of which are 2,900-square-foot Presidential Suites that can be used for breakout sessions -- is a key selling point for driving business to the new center.

The hotel also features five meeting rooms and the "Ava Gardner hotel," part of the original "Night of the Iguana" movie set, which serves as a venue for special events and can accommodate up to 300 people.
