MINNEAPOLIS--Radisson Hotels Worldwide opened its first hotel in the Republic of Ireland.

The 151-room property in Dublin opened in August upon completion of a 10-year, $42 million renovation. The hotel, called the Radisson SAS St. Helen's Hotel Dublin, is managed by Radisson SAS Hotels Worldwide. "The hotel is a national monument, so there were strict guidelines about the renovation," said Aileesh Carew, general manager.

The stone exterior of the hotel, which dates to 1754, was cleaned but otherwise left unchanged while the interior was restored with the help of historians and more than 1,000 Irish artisans, she said. "The ambience is a mix of old and new, with the use of a lot of glass."

The decor was designed to retain an old world feel with modern touches, such as the use of glass and rattan. "I think people today want a quality product but don't generally want to feel they have to behave, dress in a certain way or be intimidated," Carew said. "They don't want to wear a suit and tie to dinner, but they still want an upscale environment."

New construction includes 2,420 feet of meeting space and state-of-the-art conference facilities. Dining options include the Lepanto, set in three formal rooms overlooking the garden, and the Orangerie Bar.

Afternoon tea is available in the Ballroom Lounge, which features such 18th century pieces as a marble fireplace and chandeliers. Carew anticipates that incentive and business clients, attracted by the Radisson SAS brand, will mix with the leisure market, especially on weekends.

A Special Opening Offer, available through Nov. 30, includes accommodations and full Irish breakfast for two. The package is priced at about $115. The Hotel Plan Opening Offer, also for two, includes accommodations, a buffet breakfast, a bottle of wine, a fruit basket, a bathrobe and bedroom slippers. Available through Dec. 31, the offer costs about $145.
