Rail Europe adds a few saver options for 2000

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- This year, Rail Europe introduced only a few new passes, offering a selection similar to that of 1999.

The Saverpass, which offers discounts for two or more adults traveling together, was in effect last year for the Eurailpass and Europass and for 2000 has been added for France and Switzerland.

The France Saverpass is priced at $171 for any three days of first class rail travel in one month for two or more people, offering a savings of $39 off the standard France Railpass.

The Swiss Saverpass offers similar discounts on consecutive-day travel, as does the Swiss Saver Flexipass on three to nine days of rail travel within one month.

Prior to the introduction of these passes, there were "companion discounts" for two people, but now the passes become more affordable for groups who opt to travel under one pass.

Also within Switzerland, Rail Europe introduced Tops of Switzerland, a four-night rail/hotel plan also available from Chicago-based DER Travel. The package features a rail transfer to Interlaken with two overnight stays there; an excursion to the Jungfraujoch range; travel by boat or train to Brienz; a train journey to Lucerne with two nights there, and an excursion to Mount Pilatus.

The package price is $452 per person.
