Rain, Flooding Stop Traffic on Danube River

NEW YORK -- Heavy rains and flooding in central Europe temporarily curtailed passenger traffic on the Danube, according to a spokeswoman for the Austrian National Tourist Office here.

The spokeswoman said that the Danube Travel Commission in Vienna reported a "barge-free" zone along the Danube in much of Austria and in the Czech Republic because of high waters caused by the heavy rains. "The boat and tour operators are prepared for this situation, and all passengers are continuing their tours by motorcoach," the spokeswoman said.

Rains have subsided in the region, but Danube waters still were too high for boats to travel under the river's bridges, she added.
