Real Resorts' buying spree nets five properties

CANCUN, Mexico -- Mexico's Real Resorts purchased five hotels: Continental Villas Plaza (Cancun); Club Bananas (Playa del Carmen); Plaza Las Glorias Cabo San Lucas; Hotel Sierra (Manzanillo); and Continental Plaza (Ixtapa).

With the acquisitions, Real Resorts has grown from three properties to eight. Financial terms were not disclosed.

"As we continue to expand and implement our three distinctive resort brands ... we are investing millions of dollars in the [new] properties to bring them up to the Real standard and make each property the best in its brand category," said Fernando Garcia, managing director of Real Resorts.

Real Resorts operates three brands: Real, a four-star brand; Gran, a more expensive five-star brand; and Royal, a luxury all-inclusive brand.

All of the newly acquired properties have been reflagged with the Real moniker and will be marketed under one of the three brands.

Continental Villas Plaza has been renamed the Gran Caribe Real Resort & Spa; Hotel Sierra has become the Gran Bahia Real Resort & Spa; Plaza Las Glorias Cabo San Lucas is now the Costa Real Cabo Resort & Spa; Continental Plaza is now known as the Costa Real Ixtapa Resort & Suites; and Club Bananas becomes the Real Playa Carmen Hotel & Beach Club.

Renovation of all properties was scheduled for completion by the end of May. Rooms were to be refurbished with new carpeting, bedroom furniture, bed linens and Mexican artwork. The hotels' landscaping will be enhanced with new lighting and local flora, and the pool areas will be updated with heat-resistant decks and new lounge furniture.

In addition, all restaurants will be redesigned, meetings facilities and business services will be enhanced, and fitness centers will be equipped with the latest equipment.

Guests at any of Real Resorts' properties can use the facilities of the others (with the exception of the Royal Porto Real Suites & Spa and the Pacific coast properties).
