ResidenSea to set sail for Last Frontier

NEW YORK -- ResidenSea scheduled an Alaska cruise aboard The World for this summer.

With prices starting at $650 per unit, per night, the 14-night voyage costs more than $9,000. The price includes all meals, drinks and amenities on board as well as port charges and gratuities.

The Alaska itinerary will include calls at Anchorage, Homer, Kodiak, the Inside Passage and Juneau; Canada's coastal provinces; Seattle; Portland, Ore.; and San Francisco.

"The entire cruise industry is seeing an incredible demand for Alaska," said Signe Bjorndal, vice president of marketing services. "People are amazed by the nature. It's pretty amazing country, even if you're not an outdoors person."

Land programs in Alaska -- as in other ResidenSea destinations -- are provided through an agreement with tour operator Abercrombie & Kent.

A jet-boat excursion in Sitka provides opportunities to view whales, sea otters and other wildlife. The trip also includes helicopter flightseeing, a glacier walk and a dogsled ride.

"We don't do repeat itineraries," said Bjorndal. "We sail around the world every year, [but] we're going to spend more time in Alaska than anticipated because of the demand."

According to ResidenSea executives, The World operates more like a hotel than a cruise ship and "more like a resort than a cruise."

"We tell people that The World is not like other ships," Bjorndal said, "but when people actually get on board they say, 'Now I get it.' "

ResidenSea calls The World "mixed use." Many of The World's passengers are residents who buy their cabins. But clients also can book some of the ResidenSea cabins in the traditional manner.

The ship has four restaurants and a computerized golf simulator that models the 53 most famous courses in the world.

Voyages are scheduled from July 7 through Aug. 23.
