Resort offers tours of new Rain Maker Nature Refuge

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica -- Would you believe that Costa Rica could add one more attraction to its bounty of rain-forest products?

With the opening of Rain Maker Nature Refuge, clients staying in the Central Pacific region can book excursions to this beautifully planned, 1,334-acre refuge of forest and waterfalls, located 30 minutes from Quepos.

Morpho butterflies, bromeliads, poison dart frogs and toucans accent the lush rain forest for visitors following the river walk.

Guided by nature interpreters from the local community, hikers follow well-maintained trails with hand railings all along the way while examining a vast array of flora and fauna.

Si Como No resort villas look out to the Pacific Ocean. In addition to the overland hike is an ascent into the treetops for a bird's eye view of the jungle and cascading falls below. The 20-story canopy system allows visitors to comfortably traverse six suspended cable bridges that are connected by five tree platforms.

Jim Damalas was the major player in the development of the Rain Maker refuge, and his own rain forest property in Quepos, the Si Como No Hotel & Resort, spills down a mountainside and offers uninterrupted views of the Pacific from the guest rooms, the pool and restaurants.

Guest are accommodated in 39 spacious rooms, suites and apartments with ocean or jungle views from every balcony.

The resort offers king-size or double beds, bathrooms, kitchens or wet bars, stocked minibars and energy-efficient air conditioning.

The pool deck is the place to be for sunset, and the pool itself -- with Jacuzzi, waterslide and waterfall -- is contoured into the jungle terraces and adjacent to the bar and grill.

Facilities also include a second, more formal restaurant, as well as a conference center and a movie theater.

Damalas is adding 20 new villas, a second pool and a spa on a recently purchased adjacent property.

The most outstanding feature of this eco-friendly resort is the food, varied and delicious from breakfast through dinner.

Hotel activities include the five-hour Rain Maker excursion, priced at $65 with transportation, guided hiking and lunch.
