Ride a swimmin' pony for a sea change

OCHO RIOS, Jamaica -- Every day can be a new adventure here in Ocho Rios.

My equestrian adventure, the Horseback Beach Ride, would begin at the Chukka Cove Polo Club, about 15 minutes west of Ocho Rios in St. Ann. There, I mounted my horse, which was fitted with an English-style saddle.

The horseback group rode along a lengthy trail through two former sugar estates, Richmond and Llandovery, the latter now a dairy farm, and across a stream before reaching the stable by the beach.

Riding a swimming horse, the highlight of this excursion, feels like nothing else and is one of those great life experiences that no one who has the opportunity should miss.

My final day in Jamaica was spent climbing the famous Dunn's River Falls.

Holding hands or otherwise giving each other a hand, the group is led carefully up 900 feet of falls from beach level. After each obstacle up the limestone rocks, there was a refreshing pool of spring water waiting.

From Beaches Boscobel Resort & Golf Club, the horseback ride and swim is $75 per adult, $63 per child; excursions to Dunn's River Falls are $25 per adult, $18 per child.
