Rincon Day celebrates tradition

RINCON, Bonaire -- Every year, Bonaire's oldest village celebrates its traditions and the culture of the island on April 30 with a festival.

Rincon Day was established in 1989 by an organization founded to reintroduce Bonaire's youth to the island's past.

Activities include opening ceremonies featuring a speech made by the prime minister of the Netherlands Antilles and the performance of the winning band from a song contest.

In the weeks leading up to the event, local bands attempt to come up with the year's best song dealing with the island's culture and heritage.

Also part of Rincon Day are feasts of local food and drink and musical entertainment. Crafters also are on hand to sell their wares.
