Sam Choy Poke Festival slated for Sept. 15

KONA KOHALA COAST, Hawaii -- The Westin Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel at the Mauna Kea resort here is hosting the Sam Choy Poke Festival Sept. 15 to 17.

Poke (pronounced po-keh), is cubed raw Hawaiian fish, which is then marinated in salt, seaweed, soy sauce and vinegar.

The dish also can be cooked or seared.

It is a distinctively Hawaiian food that is used mostly as an appetizer.

Amateur and professional cooks will submit their poke to be judged in the categories of best cooked poke; traditional poke, and poke recipes using hot sauce, ogo, surimi, hokkigai, macadamia nuts, soy sauce and tofu.

The entry deadline for those entering the poke recipe contest is Sept. 1.

Entry fees are $75 per recipe in the professional category and $20 in the nonprofessional category.

Thirty-five professionals will be selected as winners as will 45 in the amateur category. First prize for professionals is $3,500 and $1,500 for the amateurs.

Other prizes include roundtrip air fare to Hawaii and interisland air fare.

During the festival there is a charity golf tournament on Saturday as well as a Hawaiian concert featuring the performers Kapena, Kealii Reichel, Ikaika Brown and the Lim Family.

The Westin Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel has 350 rooms and suites, restaurants, a health spa and tennis courts.
