Santa Cruz Boardwalk highlights one ride's birthday

SANTA CRUZ -- Visitors to this Northern California seaside community this summer will be able to celebrate a significant event -- the 75th anniversary of the Santa Cruz Boardwalk's wooden roller coaster.

It is one of the very last of its kind still in use. It has been the dominant feature of the 92-year-old facility, which is crammed with carousels, shooting galleries, side shows and all of the trappings of a good old-fashioned boardwalk.

Image The Santa Cruz Boardwalk has claimed in the past to be the only such major outdoor attraction in California, offering sun, surf, beach

and rides. It may have to settle for being one of three such attractions now: Santa Monica's Ferris wheel-dominated Pacific Park with its rides, and the UCLA Ocean Discovery Center, which opened in 1996.

The Santa Cruz Boardwalk opens for business daily May 28 through Sept. 12 -- just 11 days after the diamond anniversary of the roller coaster. Complete details of the celebratory program, with prices and times of opening, are available by calling (831) 423-5590.

The boardwalk is a part of an ad hoc marketing organization of destination bureaus and attractions known collectively as The Greater San Francisco Bay Area Vacation Council. Its geographic reach includes the San Francisco Bay Area, the wine country, the East Bay, Silicon Valley and the scenic Northern California coast. The participants are:
