NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- Florida Gov. Jeb Bush called media
coverage of the 10 shark attacks off New Smyrna Beach since Aug. 18
"disproportionate to the problem that we face," blaming the reports
for a falloff in the area's tourism.
About 60% of the Labor Day weekend reservations at the New
Smyrna Beach Holiday Inn and Suites were canceled due to the
publicity, a hotel official said.
At press time, one half-mile section of a popular surfing beach
in New Smyrna Beach was reopened, but another half-mile stretch
remained closed with the possibility of reopening for the weekend
if shark sightings were minimal.
