ORLANDO -- "We're now competing with the Renaissance, the Peabody, the Omni Rosen, the Hilton at Walt Disney World -- those types of properties," a spokesman for the Sheraton World Resort Orlando said, explaining how his property is repositioning itself following a $45 million expansion and renovation.

That project will add an 11,000-square-foot main ballroom this month and a 16-story tower with 300 rooms, set to open during the spring.

"We'll also have 10,000 more square feet of meeting space with the tower," he said. Room rates through Easter are from $119 single or double per night, plus tax.

This work follows renovations involving all 788 existing rooms during which new drapes, bedspreads and other items were added, as well as upgrades of public areas. The hotel's roof was retiled and a waterfall was added.

The Sheraton currently does about 55% group business. This figure, the spokesman said, would probably increase because of the renovations.

The hotel has four restaurants and lounges, several pools and a massage room.
