SHREVEPORT -- Just in time for the summer booking season, the Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau mailed out more than 4,000 rate information cards on its new FIT summer packages to agents.

The program consists of four commissionable packages that cover the twin cities area. Lisa Johnson, vice president of tourism for the bureau, said response to the packages, which were officially launched in March, has been good. "This is the second round of packages we have created. This year we are targeting families more," Johnson said.

Johnson said plans are under way to offer programs for area special events as well as a honeymoon package. "We have had several requests for honeymoon stays. So we are developing a plan that will offer both hotels and bed-and-breakfast lodging options."

She said one of the highlights of the honeymoon plan will be a canoe trip on the Bayou Dorcheat, operated by North Outfitters of Shreveport.

Other options coincide with area special events such as weekend plans for the August Miss Teen USA pageant or the Oct. 2 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs. There also is a Red River Rally Festival Balloon and Air Show scheduled for Sept. 3 to 5. "We also started a Rockets Over the Red [fireworks] event about two years ago, and it runs in December," she added.
