Small groups are welcome at MGM Grand

LAS VEGAS -- Small meetings groups have special status at the MGM Grand, courtesy of a Grand Meetings program launched two years ago and tailored to their needs.

Although MGM's conference facilities are vast in size, professional groups in need of 15 to 150 rooms can hold meetings in a setting that avoids a feeling of being swallowed up by the resort's 380,000-square-foot conference center, said MGM spokeswoman Shelly Mansholt.

The $100 million MGM Grand conference center offers an array of options for both small and large meeting groups. Small groups comprise 70% of the resort's entire group business, Mansholt said.

According to Chuck Bowling, MGM's senior vice president for sales and marketing, the Grand Meetings division was created so that these groups would receive the personal time and attention necessary to make their event a success.

"We hired a supportive, flexible and creative on-site service and sales staff who have shown record response time in catering to a group's needs," Bowling said.

"The result is in the numbers, with approximately one-third of our 1998-99 group business rebooking at MGM Grand for this year and beyond."

The resort has 22 breakout rooms and two boardrooms, providing 584 square feet each, that have been designated for small group use.

In addition, Grand Meetings deploys a special sales division to personalize 60 meetings rooms to small group specifications.

The team includes four sales managers, four convention service managers and two support people.

MGM Grand Productions, an in-house division, is geared for small groups as well, arranging theme parties and special events.

Among the most requested themes are Oscar Night, Viva Las Vegas and a '70s party, Bowling said. The production division also assists groups with speech- writing and technical support.

Audiovisual equipment, teleconferencing and videoconferencing facilities are available. A business center, open from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m., offers secretarial assistance; office supplies; Federal Express, United Parcel Service and Airborne delivery service; faxing; printing; business cards, and name badges.

A total of 314,899 square feet of net meetings space is available on the 115-acre, 5,034-room MGM Grand property.

For MGM Grand group reservations, call (800) 920-9411 (when booking six to 15 rooms); (800) 929-1112 (16-plus rooms). The fax number is (702) 891-1000.
