Torremolinos, Spain -The Sol Melia group here operates 10 Costa del Sol hotels often used by U.S. operators: seven in Torremolinos, two in Benalmadena and one in Marbella.

The Gran Melia Don Pepe. The largest of the group is the dual complex of the Sol Principe (623 double rooms) and Sol Principito (170 apartments and studios) on Playamar Beach in Torremolinos.

The walled and guarded compound encompasses a small resort apart from the rest of town, complete with supermarket. Incremental renovations are under way on the Principe. On a recent visit, we found that maintenance standards were high and grounds were well kept. The complex has extensive children's services.

Also serving the middle market in Torremolinos are the 295-room Sol Don Pedro, one block back from Bajondillo Beach, and the vast, 391-apartment Sol Timor, with fewer services but a more desirable location on Carihuela Beach, near the fishing port.

Two Sol Elite properties (a step up in amenities and furnishings) in Torremolinos also contract extensively with tour packagers: the Aloha Puerto, with 370 rooms and a lounge, and the 443-room Don Pablo. Both properties often host business groups as well as recreational travelers.

The most impressive of the group's offerings is the beachside Gran Melia Don Pepe, an executive getaway hotel with 184 double rooms and 18 suites near the center of Marbella.

The director of Andalusia regional sales for Sol Melia is Enzo Russi.
