South of the border: More flights to Mexico

WASHINGTON -- Alaska Airlines is seeking Transportation Department approval to fly from Los Angeles to Guadalajara on a daily basis aboard a 138-seat Boeing 737-400.

"This would be a significant benefit to passengers in California, the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, Canada and Mexico, and a strategic addition to our route structure," said Don Garvett, Alaska Airlines' vice president of planning and revenue management.

Garvett said the proposed schedule would provide convenient daily connections between Guadalajara and more than 50 cities served by Alaska and its sister carrier, Horizon Air.

Alaska provides service to six Mexico destinations with 19 daily departures.

In additon to meet demand, SunTrips will add two flights from Oakland, Calif., to Cancun, for a total of four nonstop flights per week.

From April 16 through Aug. 20, SunTrips will offer a new Wednesday flight to Cancun on a 757-200 operated by Ryan International Airlines.

During the peak summer season, May 24 to Aug. 23, a fourth nonstop flight will be added on Saturdays aboard a 757-200 operated by North American Airlines.

SunTrips offers packages to Cancun, the Riviera Maya and Cozumel. Packages include roundtrip air fare, accommodations and airport transfers.

Mexicana, which was the first carrier to offer international service from San Antonio, also has the distinction of being the only airline to have an executive lounge in Terminal 1.

Mexicana operates 18 weekly departures between San Antonio and Mexico.

The lounge offers computers with free Internet access and fax machines plus a complimentary bar, appetizers, snacks and beverages.

The lounge is available to all Star Alliance and Mexicana Frecuenta Gold members and to passengers traveling in Mexicana's Executive Class.
