Space Coast creates pre-, post-cruise plans

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- The Space Coast Office of Tourism for the first time is bringing together cruise operators and tourist concerns to create pre- and post-cruise packages that go beyond sea-bound excursions.

"If agents are booking somebody on a cruise, they will be able to say, 'Hey, you can also stay three nights at the beaches here and then enjoy the Orlando tourist attractions,'" said Rob Varley executive director of the tourism office.

Varley's office is acting as a "facilitator" in the creation of the packages. "We're working with a couple of cruise lines and some major hotels and attractions to put them together, so we can then go to the travel agents and talk about them," Varley said. "This is the first time we've tried to put whole packages together and help promote them as one unit, but we think there's definitely a market out there."

The first package could be available in time to be introduced at World Travel Market Nov. 15 to 20 in London, Varley said. "We've talked to some wholesalers and they're definitely interested," he said.

Direct mailings will be sent to travel agents to alert them to the new packages, he said. "I think this is really a chance for agents to step up to the plate and add to the bottom line," Varley said.
