Special rate accompanies debut of U. of Fla. hotel and conference center

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Hilton Hotels Corp. held the grand opening of the 248-room University of Florida Hotel & Conference Center here.

The hotel, owned by Mass Mutual-Cornerstone Advisors and operated by DT Management, a subsidiary of Hilton, has two adjoining seven-story towers.

The hotel provides concierge and bellman services; express check-in and checkout; a business center, and a gift shop.

A courtesy shuttle also operates to Gainesville Airport, the University of Florida campus and other points of interest.

The conference center specializes in small to midsize meetings, training sessions, educational think tanks and conferences.

The 25,000-square-foot center features 13 meeting rooms, a 7,000-square-foot ballroom, spacious pre-function areas and the capacity to serve up to 700 people.

Managed by Harrison Conference Centers, a division of Hilton, the conference center has the latest technology for meetings, such as a direct fiber-optic link to the University of Florida GatorLink Internet-2 network.

Standard guest rooms have a sitting area with a plush easy chair and ottoman, a hair dryer, a coffeemaker, an iron and ironing board.

In-room entertainment and information services include on-demand movies, cable TV, wireless cable Internet access and interactive guest services.

Business-oriented features of the guest rooms include high-speed Internet access, a spacious work desk with armchair, a two-line telephone, speakerphone capabilities, dataports, voice mail and a daily newspaper.

A grand opening rate of $89 per night, single or double, is in effect through Aug. 31. The rack rate is $139, and during special events it increases to $199.

Rates range from $189 for the hospitality suite to $299 for the presidential suite.

Recreational facilities consist of a fitness center, an outdoor pool and a whirl-pool.

Golf and tennis facilities are nearby.

The hotel's fine dining room is Albert's, offering American and Continental cuisine.

Wende Blumberg, formerly director of sales and marketing for the Xerox Training Center in Leesburg, Va., is general manager of the hotel, which is located about 10 miles from the airport and adjacent to the University of Florida.

Karl Kaufmann, director of sales and marketing, most recently held a similar post at the Holiday Inn West, Gainesville.
