St. Martin/St. Maarten tourist offices slate fam program

NEW YORK -- To acquaint agents with the dual-nation island of St. Martin/St. Maarten, the tourist offices are offering their annual fam program through Oct. 31.

U.S. arrivals to the island totalled 187,786 in 2000, according to the latest numbers released by the island. The total represents a 5.5% decrease over the same period in 1999.

"We want [travel agents] to come and enjoy the multicultural experiences of St. Maarten/St. Martin," said Regina LaBega, director of tourism for Dutch St. Maarten.

For a $25 application fee, agents and one companion are invited to spend four nights on the island, two on each side, with complimentary hotel accommodations.

A selection of 21 hotels is participating in the program.

Rooms are assigned on a random, space-available basis, based on agents' date options.

The cost does not cover air fare; however, American Airlines and US Airways are offering AD 75 fares, to agents.

Additional island discounts are provided upon confirmation of reservations.
