State Dept. updates Sudan travel warning

WASHINGTON -- The State Dept. updated its existing travel warning for the Sudan, advising U.S. citizens against visiting the country where opposing factions are attempting to negotiate a peace accord that would end a long-running civil war.

The department noted that despite efforts to reach an accord, "there is serious fighting in Darfur and a humanitarian crisis brought on by fighting, drought and famine."

Additionally, it said the "U.S. government has received indications of terrorist threats aimed at American and Western interests in Sudan" that may include suicide operations, bombings, or kidnappings.
