CHARLOTTE AMALIE, St. Thomas --- More cruise ship passengers will be able to visit St. Thomas when a four-year, $8 million dock-strengthening project is completed this month.

The project's aim was to replace the dock's sheet metal and steel construction with concrete and other materials strong enough to support larger cruise ships.

Three such ships -- Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas, the Carnival Triumph and the Carnival Legend -- arrive Sept. 30, bringing almost 9,000 passengers to the island.

Additional upgrades to the dock area include installation of a generator capable of powering the Havensight Mall when power outages occur.

The mall is a popular retail facility at the pier.
