Tempe to build WaterWalk facility

TEMPE -- Plans are under way for WaterWalk, a multiuse lakeside promenade to be built here.

WaterWalk construction begins next year, and plans call for 1 million square feet of office, retail, restaurant, theater and shopping space on the north shore of the manmade Rio Salado Town Lake. An outdoor stage for entertainment and a nightly laser light show also are part of the plans.

Open-air markets and meandering streams will add to the ambience and, according to an official, "draw Tempe citizens and visitors back time and again."

Construction will begin this year on the 1,000-room Peabody Hotel Tempe, which is part of the WaterWalk project. Its debut is expected in 2002.

According to officials, the Peabody is to offer more than 125,000 square feet of convention and meeting space.

Water taxis will take visitors across the lake from the Peabody to WaterWalk.

The WaterWalk project is a venture of Jonesboro, Ark.-based Belz-Burrow Development Group.
