Tennis' Kremlin Cup set for Oct. 18

NEW YORK -- The Kremlin Cup tennis tournament is one of the biggest annual sporting events in Russia, and this year it celebrates its 10th anniversary with a $2 million purse guaranteed to draw the world's top players to Moscow this fall.

To be held from Oct. 18 to Nov. 14 at Moscow's Olympic Stadium, top players such as Steffi Graf, Monica Seles and Venus Williams have already entered, and the world's No. 1-ranked men's player, Russia's Yevgeny Kafelnikov, is expected to compete.

A recent function here sponsored by Tennis Week magazine and the Kremlin Cup organization brought together tour operators and other travel-related interests in order to introduce them to the Kremlin Cup, as well as to establish relationships that might lead to the development programs in conjunction with the event.

Both General Tours and Norvista, operators with packages to Russia, said they were in discussions to develop plans that include the tournament.

For the trade, the Kremlin Cup will be offering 1,000 tickets to both the women's and men's tournaments for free to travel agents whose clients visit Moscow for the tournament. Kremlin Cup, Phone: (212) 808-4750, Fax: (212) 983-6302
