Three deluxe hotels open on Malta

NEW YORK -- Three deluxe hotels on Malta debuted this year.

  • In Valletta, the Hilton Malta, overlooking the three-basin yacht marina, is in fashionable St. Julian's on the island's north coast.
  • The hotel has 201 deluxe rooms, 75 executive rooms and 15 suites. A seaview twin goes for $246 in high season.

    Recreation facilities include a health and leisure center, indoor and outdoor pools, a diving center, a tennis court and a private beach club equipped for water skiing and wind surfing.

  • In Mdina, the Xara Palace Hotel occupies a restored 17th century palazzo in the old quarter, tucked into the ramparts.
  • The property has 17 suites, each decorated with antique furniture and original paintings.

    High season rates range from $213 to $325.

    Fine dining and rooftop panoramic views are features of the Mondion Restaurant, and simpler Mediterranean fare is served at the Trattoria beneath the palace arches.

  • In Gozo, which is accessible from Valletta by helicopter or catamaran service, the San Lawrenz Leisure Resort offers 87 suites, starting at $145 during high season. All feature a private balcony or terrace.
  • Leisure facilities include three pools, a diving center, boat rental facilities, a health club, minigolf, two squash courts, two tennis courts and the Thalgo Marine Cure Spa.
