Toronto concierges' recommended restaurants

TORONTO -- Who knows better where to eat than a hotel concierge?

The following is a sampling of ethnic restaurants, courtesy of the concierges at the Metropolitan Hotel (Lanfranco Gualandi), the Sutton Place (Dora Corrasco) and the Windsor Arms (Patric Cutri):

  • Ouzeri, a mid-range Greek restaurant with an excellent wine bar. Phone: (416) 778-0500.
  • Myth, a stylish nightspot with a sexy atmosphere and elegant antique pool tables; excellent calamari. Phone: (416) 461-8383.
  • Other mentions: Christina, Avli and Byzo's.
  • Chinese

  • Lee Garden, considered among the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Crowded, barely decorated and with tables covered by plastic sheeting -- I can vouch for that -- Lee Garden is famous for great food, good service and low prices -- I can vouch for that, too.
  • Phone: (416) 593-9524.

  • Other mentions: Diamond Palace, Lai Wah Heen, Dynasty, Pink Pearl and Sai Woo.
  • Italian

  • Grappa Ristorante, a pleasant, homey restaurant with a small but interesting menu. Phone: (416) 535-3337.
  • Other mentions: Giovanna, La Bruchetta, Bellini's, Sotto Sotto, Trattoria Giancarlo and Centro.
  • Indian

  • Babur, (416) 599-7720; Indian Flavour, (416) 408-2799, and Sirtaj Indian Cuisine (416) 929-8309.
  • Afro-Caribbean

  • The Bamboo, a Queen Street West music club specializing in African, West Indian and third world music. Features an excellent tropical cuisine. Phone: (416) 593-5771
  • Other mentions: Calypso Hut and Zaidy's.
