Tourism Cares awards $8,500 grant to Civil Rights trail

Kelly Ingram ParkTravel industry non-profit organization Tourism Cares has awarded the Birmingham Civil Rights Heritage Trail in Birmingham, Ala., with an $8,500 grant.

Funds were raised during the 2010 Travel South Showcase in April, a travel show put on by Travel South USA, a regional destination marketing organization for Southern states.

At the show, Tourism Cares sold wristbands to raise the grant money, and sales were matched dollar-for-dollar by Tourism Cares and Travel South USA. The Group Travel Leader, a travel trade publication based in Lexington, Ky., also pledged to match the initial $500 in sales.

The Birmingham Civil Rights Trail documents the events of the Civil Rights movement in Alabama in the 1960s. Signs and displays at various sites of historic significance around the city explain the events in Birmingham from segregation to desegregation.
