Piarco Airport in Trinidad will be refurbished in preparation for the Summit of the Americas, an April event that will welcome heads of government from 24 countries, including President-elect Barack Obama and Venezuela President Hugo Chavez.

The fifth Summit of the Americas is expected to attract 4,000 delegates, observers and advisors as well as 1,000 media, according to the Trinidad Guardian.

Trinidad’s government has arranged for cruise ships to house approximately 4,500 visitors, since Port of Spain and its environs have only 1,700 hotel rooms available.
