NEW YORK -- The Turkish Tourist Office released updated educational
and sales tools for the trade, including a PowerPoint presentation,
a CD-ROM, a press kit and its annual travel directory.
The tools complement Turkey's plan to spend $6 million on U.S.
promotions in 2002, up 50% compared with last year.
"We need to advertise more and show Turkey's genuine face," said
Mustafa Tasar, minister of tourism, who asked agents to tell
clients that Turkey is a democratic, secular state and "the only
Muslim country that is both modern and Western."
Turkey, which had projected 600,000 U.S. visitors in 2001, fell
more than 150,000 short of the goal due to Sept. 11.
