U.K. airport passenger traffic off 1% in 2001

LONDON -- U.K. airports handled 181 million passengers in 2001, a 1% decline from the previous year, Britain's Civil Aviation Authority said in a June 24 report.

The big drop was at London's Heathrow, which handled 60 million passengers last year -- 6% fewer than in 2000. Gatwick's numbers fell by 3%.

The smaller airports fared better, with passenger numbers at Stansted up by 15%, at Luton up by 6% and at London City Airport up by 2%. The largest drops overall were seen in the September to December time period.
