U.S. cautions travelers to Bangalore

WASHINGTON -- U.S. citizens in India should "exercise extreme caution" and "travel only if necessary" to Bangalore, the capital of the Karnataka state, the State Department warned.

Protests have closed government offices, businesses and much of the city's transportation, and some protests have included looting, tire burning, window breaking and traffic disruption, the department said.

The protests stem from the kidnapping of popular Indian film star Rajkumar near the border between Karnataka and the state of Tamil Nadu by the Indian bandit Veerappan.
