U.S. issues alert to Americans visiting Ecuador

WASHINGTON -- The State Department alerted U.S. travelers to Ecuador that a Marxist group, the People's Liberation Army, claimed responsibility for sending package bombs through the Ecuadoran mail in late February.

No package bombs were mailed to U.S. citizens or organizations, but the group's prop-aganda leaflets make threats against U.S.-affiliated organizations and U.S. citizens in general, the department said.

"U.S. citizens in Ecuador are advised to exercise caution in all aspects of their daily routines ... [and] treat any mail or packages from unfamiliar sources with caution," the department said.
