CHRISTIANSTED, U.S. Virgin Islands --- The 150-room Carambola Beach Resort on St. Croix's north shore plans a $40 million expansion that will include a conference center, a casino, a spa and 100 new guest units, according to JS Management, the firm that will oversee the renovation.

Work on the project is expected to begin early next year.

The resort was purchased from Sunterra Corp. a year ago by a group of Baltimore investors who ended the timeshare operation and converted the property back into a resort.

Carambola, a member of the St. Croix Hotel & Tourism Assn., has not yet applied for a casino license, an association spokesman said.
