ENCINO, Calif. -- Uniworld, based here, cut prices and added a day to each of its 1999-2000 China tours, according to the USTOA-member company.

"Basically three things happened because of the market conditions in China," said Lawrence Dessler, vice president of marketing for Uniworld.

"One, we were able to cut $500 off the price; two, we were able to add an extra day to the tour, and three, all of our hotels moved to the deluxe category. So in very real terms, China and the Orient have never been a better buy."

All of the tours combine top regional sites within China with a Yangtze River cruise aboard a Victoria Cruises vessel.

Other tour components include roundtrip air via Northwest Airlines or United Airlines (with the same fares offered from either Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Boston or many other gateways), accommodations at deluxe hotels, all meals, three cultural performances (Chinese opera in Beijing, a Tang Dynasty show in Xian and an acrobatics show in Shanghai) and transfers.

Uniworld's four China itineraries include:

  • The 13-day Highlights of China & the Yangtze River tour, which starts at $2,598 per person, double, and visits Beijing, Xian and Chongqing, where participants embark on a four-night cruise.
  • The 18-day Best of China & the Yangtze itinerary, which starts at $3,398 per person, double, and travels to Beijing, Xian, Shanghai and Guilin, with a four-night cruise from Chongqing to Wuhan and a three-day stay in Hong Kong.
  • The 16-day Treasures of China & the Yangtze River program, which starts at $2,698 per person, double, and visits Shanghai, Suzhou, Beijing, Xian and Wuhan, where clients embark on a five-night cruise.
  • The 16- or 18-day Splendors of China & Grand Yangtze River Cruise itinerary, which starts at $3,098 per person, double, and includes stops in Beijing and Xian before traveling to Chongqing for an eight-night cruise to Shanghai that sails through Jingzhou, Wuhan, Jiujiang, Guichi, Nanjing and Yangzhou.
  • Both of these tours do not include the acrobatic show in Shanghai, however.
