Velas Vallarta makes pitch for groups

PUERTO VALLARTA -- Velas Vallarta Grand Suite Resort is making a significant pitch for the groups market and preparing to break ground on its second resort in Puerto Vallarta.

The property unveiled a $2 million convention center with a capacity for up to 700 people.

The venue features a 1,960-square-foot grand salon, which can be divided into six smaller rooms holding from 25 to 180 people each.

The convention center was designed to be an elegant facility catering to meetings, conventions and special events in Puerto Vallarta.

Installations include the latest in audio and visual equipment, and a comprehensive communications system with the capability to connect to the Internet and handle point-to-point videoconferencing.

New food and beverage outlets also were constructed to efficiently handle group dining.

With the new focus on large groups, the property changed its name to Velas Vallarta Grand Suite Resort and Convention Center.

Expansion also is high on the list of priorities for Velas Vallarta, which is a family-owned resort.

The property plans to break ground on a 360-suite sister resort next year.

The resort will be located in Nuevo Vallarta, a master-planned resort complex on the bay.

The existing Velas Vallarta property is situated in the Marina Vallarta development.

The new property will be an upscale, oceanfront resort with Mexican-style architecture and ambience.

In addition to the convention center and the new property, Velas Vallarta has improved its offerings over the past year by renovating and remodeling its suites.

To promote the changes, Velas Vallarta created a number of specials for both agents and clients.

The property designated September Travel Agent Appreciation Month.

Agents can take advantage of a rate of $30 per night for a one-bedroom suite for stays Sept. 1 through 30.

From Oct. 1 to Dec. 20, the nightly agent rate is $45 for one-bedroom suites and $70 for two-bedroom suites.

Clients are being offered one free night for each night paid during September, as well as reduced rates on one-bedroom suites until Dec. 15, and a fourth night free in all room categories until Dec. 20.

The offers, which cannot be combined, are available through more than 20 Velas Vallarta tour operator partners, including American Airlines Vacations, Adventure Tours, Alaska Airlines Vacations, Express Holidays, Friendly Holidays, Gogo Worldwide Vacations, Pleasant Mexico Holidays, Runaway Tours, Sunmakers, SunTrips, and Town and Country Tours.

In other news, America West Vacations added Velas Vallarta to its Mexico lineup effective the end of August.

Velas Vallarta is a 361-suite beachfront property with studios and one-, two- and three-bedroom units with fully equipped kitchens and living rooms.

The property has two restaurants, three swimming pools, a spa, a fitness center, a swim-up bar, four tennis courts and a basketball court.

A daily program of recreational and sporting activities is featured, as well as a supervised children's program offering activities such as arts and crafts, snorkeling and swimming lessons, and Spanish classes.

Nightly rates at Velas Vallarta start at $150 for a studio, $220 for a one-bedroom suite, $380 for a two-bedroom suite and $540 for a three-bedroom suite.
