Waikiki resort slates refit

HONOLULU -- The Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort will start a $55 million renovation to its Kuhio tower on May 22 with work expected to be completed by the third week of December.

Marriott will renovate the lobby area of the tower and the first floor area, add a restaurant and redo the third-floor pool area, according to John Limper, Marriott International's area director of marketing.

The chain bought the 1,304-room property in November from Tokyo-based Otaka for $125.5 million.

Marriott plans to sell the hotel soon and retain a long-term management contract.
