WAIKIKI, Hawaii -- A nine-store, upscale retail shopping complex featuring the likes of Tiffany & Co. and Gucci is nearing completion here, with a soft opening set for November.

The grand opening for the 100,000-square-foot, $140 million project developed by the Honu Group is set for Dec. 6, according to company president Tom Applegate.

The eight separate buildings, located on the 2100 block of Kalakaua Ave. at the entrance to Waikiki, all will house "flagship stores, so it's not like tiny stores catering to accessories," said Applegate. "They will all have full selections of their lines of products."

For example, the Tiffany store will have 12,000 square feet of space; the Gucci store will have 18,500 square feet. Other stores include Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, JP Tod's and Boucheron.

The fact that all these "major, global flagship stores" have chosen to open in Waikiki says something about the destination, said Applegate.

"First of all, it's a vote of confidence and second, it shows the success of this kind of market in Waikiki," he said.
