Waimea center aims to give visitors an overview of area

WAIMEA -- The Waimea Main Street and Waimea Preservation Association opened the Waimea Visitor Center here.

The center is on Kawaihae Road behind High Country Traders. It is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

"Our goal is not to keep people in the visitor center; it's to give them a quick overview of the area and get them out into town so they can enjoy what we residents love about Waimea," said Leilani Hino, executive director of Waimea Main Street.

"We have some wonderful places to eat and some real off-the-wall visitor attractions," said Hino.

"You can visit a rose farm or check out the Parker ranch, and in Waimea you just get a sense of a slower pace of life. It's a good place to poke around in."

The center has a computer information kiosk on the front porch of the building for visitors who show up when the center is closed.

The kiosk will eventually link to the Waimea Main Street Web page, which is located at www.north hawaii.net, has information about the Waimea area, a map of the northern part of the Big Island, information on astronomy observatories nearby, alternative medicine (a Big Island niche), shopping and restaurants.
