Welsh Rarebits marks 20 years

NEW YORK -- Hotel group Welsh Rarebits is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a new brochure guide for -- and a host of deals at -- its 44 member properties in Wales.

Founder Emyr Griffith, who started the group with 20 country houses in 1985, said member hotels boast Wales' highest standards in accommodation, food and "that elusive quality variously defined as atmosphere, ambience or, best of all, croeso, the Welsh word for 'welcome.' "

Packages at Welsh Rarebits properties include a weekend Mother's Day deal at the Hotel Maes-y-Neuadd in Harlech priced from about $352 per person, double.

The two-night stay can be taken March 19 and 20 or March 20 and 21. Britain's "Mothering Day" is observed two months before the similar U.S. holiday celebrated each May.

The rate includes accommodations, four-course dinner, full Welsh breakfast, 17.5% VAT and extra perks, such as a bottle of champagne and a gift basket.

Other deals include a two-night "garden-and-gourmet" stay at Fairyhill, priced at about $633 per person, and a food-and-wine weekend at the Warpool Court Hotel in St. David's (March 19 to 20), priced from $363 a person.

Welsh Rarebits pays agents 10% commission.
