Whale foundation sets tours

KIHEI -- The Pacific Whale Foundation has a number of new tours for the summer, including two with excursions to Lanai, and programs for kids, with an emphasis on marine education.

The Lanai Afternoon Snorkel Adventure is a trip to the reefs around Lanai. The Oceanic Dolphin Encounter and Snorkel Eco-adventure trip offers dolphin watching and snorkeling.

Both trips leave from Lahaina Harbor.

The Lanai Afternoon Snorkel trip is on a sailing catamaran. It includes snorkel gear, refreshments and snacks, an on-board snorkel class and a guided snorkeling reef tour with a naturalist who swims with the guests to interpret what they see.

The trip leaves at 1 p.m. and returns at 4:30 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays. The price is $39 for adults and $19.50 for children ages 4 to 12.

The Oceanic Dolphin Encounter and Snorkel Eco-adventure look for unusual species of dolphin near Lanai. The catamaran cruise departs Lahaina at 7:30 a.m. and returns at 1 p.m.

A naturalist on board describes the social behavior of several types of dolphins that may be seen. The boat makes stops at two different reefs for snorkeling.

Included in this trip are snorkel gear, on-board snorkel lessons, boogie boards, breakfast, lunch, beer, mai tais and wine.

The cost is $89 for adults and $4.50 for children ages 4 to 12.

Another program offered this summer is the Molokini and Turtle Arches Snorkel Eco-adventure featuring snorkeling at Molokini (a half-moon-shaped piece of land off Maui) and at Turtle Arches, which is a spot near Maalaea Harbor where turtles congregate.

Kids up to age 12 go free when they are accompanied by one paying adult. The price for adults is $59 each. The kids-go-free offer is valid through Nov. 30.

This trip leaves from Maalaea Harbor at 7 a.m. and returns at noon. It includes breakfast, lunch, refreshments, snorkel gear and flotation devices. A naturalist goes along to interpret what guests see in the ocean.
