Insider's brother, a poet who is fairly well known in literary circles, does not share his sister's obsession with mundane things like the photo ID requirement for boarding aircraft. He was nearly denied boarding on a recent United flight: He was ticketless, ID-less and credit-card-less, in violation of United's rule that E-Ticket passengers must be in possession of the credit card used to buy the trip. The trip was a Christmas gift from a lady in Wyoming. But then he remembered that he did indeed have photo ID of a sort: the photo on the back cover of his latest book. The gate agent -- now, how often does this happen? -- was a fan. The poet flew.
