Looking for a date for New Year's Eve? Dig this. The Hebrew University in Jerusalem and the University of Hartford are offering a program in which volunteers can join the first week of a monthlong archaeological excavation at the Ein Gedi oasis, near the Dead Sea in Israel's Judean Desert, starting Dec. 28. Ein Gedi and its waterfalls are mentioned in the Bible, and previous digs have revealed a fourth century Roman village and some sixth century synagogues, among other treasures. Visitors interested in moving the sands of time will be offered canopy-sheltered mingling over breakfast and lunch amid the date trees. Free time for more dates will be on the weekend.
