It's a little hard to see, but it's in the photo, right there in the newsletter of the National Association of Railroad Passengers: a picture of an Amtrak control cab leading a train through Illinois with what appears to be duct tape where a red light should be.

The association, a tireless advocate for increased train usage (and funding), said the photo is "emblematic of the maintenance deficiencies that could become more prevalent" if the House cuts Amtrak funding.

The Obama administration explains its financial support for high-speed rail as an investment in America's future, which we believe it is, but Amtrak is hauling passengers in the here and now, and that requires a continuing investment in the present.
