After our daylong tour of the Gallatin Valley (see item above), we
were treated to steak and "fixins" at a noted cowboy bar and
restaurant in Belgrade, about a half-hour from Bozeman. We
mentioned to two Montanans at the table that the state's vaunted
lack of a speed limit seemed to work OK but that it could get a
little hairy when an interstate-hauling 18-wheeler came a-roarin'
up the two-lane county roads. "Yeah," one of our hosts said, "we
don't have many accidents, but when we do, they're doozies."
"What's interesting," the other local said, "is that sometimes,
horrible accidents make the front page of the Bozeman Chronicle,
sometimes they make Page 16 and sometimes they don't make the paper
at all." To which the first Montanan added, "Yeah, out here, we
scoop 'em up pretty quick."
