Hurtigruten sailings explore Norway's past and present

Hurtigruten is offering three unique cruise itineraries led by Terje Leiren, Professor of Scandinavian Studies and History at the University of Washington in Seattle. The Norwegian Experience Tours include themed excursions, onboard lectures and featured films to immerse passengers in Norwegian history.

Departing Sept. 2, the six-night Viking Coast cruise sails from Bergen to Kirkenes and explores the lives of historic Norwegian explorers. Guests are treated to excursions such as an authentic Lofotr Viking Feast in a reconstruction of the largest Viking house ever found and a tour of the Nidaros Cathedral.

Making the reverse trek from Kirkenes to Bergen, the seven-night Remember Heroes cruise departs on Sept. 7. The cruise commemorates World War II soldiers with excursions to historic landmarks and museums.

The final option, the Norwegian Experience, keeps guests from having to choose between the two legs of the journey and allows them to enjoy the 12-night roundtrip departing Sept. 2.

The Viking cruise is priced from $2,199 per person, double; the heroes cruise is priced from $2,299; and the roundtrip experience is priced from $3,299. The costs include cabin accommodations, services of an English-speaking Expedition Leader on board, excursions, a one-night hotel stay in Bergen with breakfast (with the seven- or 12-night itineraries) and all transfers.
