A $45 million renovation project at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa has led to the furlough of 70 employees.

The resort employees are expected to be off the job until December, when work on 338 of the 50-acre Poipu property's 602 total guestrooms is scheduled for completion.

Work is under way on the second of a three-phase renovation that involves the addition of marble-tiled entryways, walk-in showers, mahogany furniture, new carpeting, wall and window coverings.

The final phase of the room upgrades is expected to be finished by April and will remove around 70 guestrooms from service.

The Grand Hyatt Kauai employs about 1,000 people.
